When a Strong Man’s Soul Is Broken for His Best Friend

Michael Cogdill, of WYFF News 4 in Greenville, SC, Holding the Poetry Image of “Maggie’s Love.”

Hearing of his tragic loss, my heart was more than touched. I, too, felt that sting so great and fire-piercing as a jagged sword finding its way into the depths of me only five years earlier. Losing a beloved furry friend can rip away a part of yourself. Empties you of tears you never knew you owned. Drains your mind of time you only thought you would share with this beautiful, God-created spirit.

Michael Cogdill is a treasured friend to all. He is an intensely compassionate and gifted man, so loved by countless people in this world. A local journalist, He welcomed me into the local television station with open arms on September 4, 2013. I had never encountered someone displaying as much appreciation as Michael did when I presented him with my humble gift of a Poetry Image to honor the memory of his recently-departed Mags. She was one week short of her fifth birthday, and his pain and grief swallowed me up like a whirlwind.

Viewing his smile in this photograph grants the questions of my heart sweet confirmation. And I must say, I feel extremely blessed that I was able to offer even a small portion of God’s love to a man who yields so much joy and hope to the world. I count it an honor to know him and to have met him. He has shared much with me and even found time within his busy schedule to console my deeply-bereft heart through his writings during a loss so huge in February, 2013. Because of Michael, I am striving to find my place. I am learning my voice does matter, and there will always be some receptive soul waiting to listen.

Thank you, Michael, for your beautiful and giving heart. God bless you, my dear friend!

About Heart Written: Doris Hayes Gibson

My name is Doris Hayes Gibson. My life revolves around Jesus Christ, my Creator, my Redeemer, the Lord of my worship, and the Hope for my tomorrow. My passion is to illustrate God's beauty and love through poetry and song lyrics. I have created hundreds of framed poetry images. Some were gifts of encouragement; some to honor a memory of a loved one, and some were created to help someone celebrate a special occasion. After living out of state for several years, I am, once again, residing in the beautiful Upstate of South Carolina. I have three grown children, five grandchildren, and a blue tortoiseshell Burmese cat. Illustrating God's beauty and love through words of poetry is my deepest passion. Although I have always enjoyed writing, it wasn't until 2005 (when God shut one door) that I realized He was opening the door of a tremendous opportunity to see Him use me in a spectacular way. While I do not claim any greatness of ability in any shape or form, I do know that God brought me through many trials and heartaches for such a time as this. I am now able to share this gift of poetry, with which He has blessed me, to magnify Him through blessing others. I Peter 4:10,11 states: "Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in its various forms. If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen." Through my writings, my main goal is to edify Christ. If I have touched one person in a positive way through this ministry, I know it will be worth every effort I put into my work. As I have said before, "This is My Labor of Love...but God's Work of Art." My first book, Heart Written - Breaking Free, was published in November of 2012. It is my prayer that it will reach countless souls and bless lives in tremendous ways. In 2014, my second book, Heart Written - Calling Me, was published. My third and fourth books, Heart Written - Cleansing River and Heart Written - Guarded Treasures, are now available. Please visit any online bookstore to purchase my books or contact me for your personally signed copies of my Heart Written series.

The time that lost one of my own precious furry ones years ago, left me with an unspeakable pain and longing that took me a very long time to come out of. Now, as look back and remember my little one, the heartwarming times we spent together far outweigh the darkness I felt after losing him.
Thank you for sharing this story, Doris.

    In His peace and love,

You can see the kindest of his heart showing through his smile. What a tragic loss to lose a pet you love so dearly.

  3. Overwhelmed by this kindness. And so very grateful. Seeing her looking out at me from that picture is a daily reminder she abides within. Heart Written, you are Heart Strong!!

    • Maggie, indeed, still survives within, Michael! I’m so glad to be a part of your healing…to gift you with a small portion of the joy and light your loving friend awarded you and others while on her journey here.

May your heart keep smiling and your soul remain at peace through the sweetest memories of “Maggie’s Love.”
